TPE & Technology: A Teacher's reflections

California Standards and Teacher Performance Expectations (TPE)

  • A. Making Subject Matter Comprehensible To Students
TPE1. Specific Pedagogical Skills For Subject Matter Instruction
How can technology help you make your subject matter comprehensible to students?
    JOURNAL REFLECTION:
TPE 1 : Because students learn in different ways, it is necessary to use a variety of strategies, to make subject matter comprehensible to all students, (Gardner’s Intelligences). Technology is making that possible to a large extent because of the audio and visual aspects of computers. It also enables hands on and personal as well as group activity aspects of learning. The Internet offers a viable source for scholarly content, when chosen wisely. Student comprehension is enriched by a diversity of perspectives at all learning stages.
The technology is moving ahead at rapid rate. Teachers using technology tools (such as computers) as audio-visual aides as well as supporting student use of tools (such as word processing, spreadsheets and web authoring tools) require the teacher update his /her computer skills through a regular schedule of Professional Development

  • B. Assessing Student Learning
TPE 2. Monitoring Student Learning During Learning
TPE 3. Interpretation And Use Of Assessments
How can technology help you assess student learning?
    JOURNAL REFLECTION:
    TPE2, TPE 3:
Teachers have the ability to document, analyze and share student data through technology tools available on our classroom computers and through our school and district networks.
Computers make grading and records keeping organized. Communication with the students, parents, and other teachers (via e-mail and online blogs) are more efficient and productive.
Graphing test results of students over time can give teachers data for comparisons, as well as document individual student growth (Electronic Portfolios)
School districts networks have tools to monitor attendance, grades, and teacher communications:
Our district provides district wide communications through its Network. Every classroom teacher has a computer with MS Office installed as well as Groupwise (©) E-mail connecting all teachers and administrators and district personnel. The district uses Aries Software to record attendance and grades and academic plans for special needs students.

  • C. Engaging and Supporting Students In Learning
    TPE 4. Making Content Accessible
    TPE 5. Student Engagement
TPE 6. Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices
    TPE 7. Teaching English Learners
How can technology help you engage and support students in learning?

This student lesson crosses 7th and 8th grade level curriculum of science and language Arts.
The assignments make science content accessible through teacher selection of internet web sites. Students are immediately engaged through text, visual, audio and will finish the project through a Blog interaction.
Students experience valid age and grade level appropriate sources and learn citation techniques in their written reports, which are done in MS Word, in MLA format.
Students apply higher order skills and creativity by creating their own stories.
By publishing them to the Class Blog and giving and receiving comments they grow as thinkers and as writers.
Peer grading in grammar, spelling and punctuation is done in class, where students have an opportunity to correct before publication.
In teaching English learners, this lesson offers visuals, simulations, and several levels of text for comprehension on the web sites. These students can find answers to the assignment questions through interaction with peers (groups) and through teacher assisted selection.
Our District offers assistance through the bi-literacy web site:

  • D. Planning Instruction And Designing Learning Experiences For Students
    TPE 8. Learning About Students
    TPE 9. Instructional Planning
How can technology help you plan instruction and design learning experiences for students?
    JOURNAL REFLECTION:
    TPE 8, TPE 9:
Computer technology has enhanced my ability to design more effective lessons and to engage the students more earnestly, respecting their diverse learning styles and needs. Membership in online libraries and online forums had broadened my access to educational research. I have also found case studies and lesson plan ideas and can find other teachers experiences and responses to their use.

  • E. Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning
    TPE10. Instructional Time
    TPE11. Social Environment
How can technology help you create and maintain an effective environment for student learning?
    JOURNAL REFLECTION:
    TPE 10, TPE 11:
By establishing a technology use agreement between school, parents and students we reinforce knowledge and comprehension of the rules for safe use of the internet in the classroom environment. Discipline for disruption of someone else’s right to learn and inappropriate use of the tools must carry a consequence, equal in degree to the infraction. I model the correct response to social, ethical, legal and human issues regarding technology use and require my students cite their sources and respect copy write and intellectual property laws.

The best way for me to ensure the equitable access to technology resources for all students is to communicate with the other teachers, counselors and parents of my students, to discuss needs, especially where ESL and IEP programs exist. Technology enhances my ability to communicate in a timely and effective manner by using e-mail and the Aeries Software that stores all student data (such as IEP’s), and makes it available online to teachers and administrators (password protected).

  • F. Developing as a Professional Educator
TPE 12. Professional, Legal, and Ethical Obligations
    TPE 13. Professional Growth
How can technology help you develop as a professional educator? JOURNAL REFLECTION:
    TPE 12, TPE 13
Our district has a program for Professional Development that enables teachers to sign up for the necessary courses online, on the District web site.
An entire section is also devoted to online courses. A busy teacher, with grading and lesson preparation can benefit from the online learning environment.
Calendars and planning tools are available on the District web site to keep me on target for my personal professional goals.
In addition, Universities offer online courses and programs to complete the Master and Doctoral degree requirements. I have had the joy of opportunity to interact with students all over the world through online study. It is in my plans to pursue a Ph.D. through an
    Online university.
